About Prairie City
Prairie City is a small rural community in the John Day Valley of Grant County, Eastern Oregon (ZIP 97869). Situated at an elevation of approximately 3,500 feet, the town serves as a gateway to the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness and is flanked by the Blue Mountains to the north.
The town's character is shaped by its high-desert climate — cold, snowy winters and hot, dry summers — and its position along the upper reaches of the John Day River. The surrounding landscape is a mix of riparian greenery, sagebrush-covered valley slopes, and dense coniferous forests.
Prairie City was incorporated on February 23, 1887, and today is home to approximately 600 residents. Known as a small city with a big heart, it combines historic charm with a strong sense of community.
